2018 Mineral Area K-12 Student Art Show Winners
This spring, Mineral Area Council on the Arts awarded dozens of students from surrounding school districts for their skill and creativity in various media of artwork. The art show and competition, sponsored by MACOA, was held May 5 in the Robert E. Sechrest Sr. Field House on the Mineral Area College Park Hills campus.
Two students won Best of Show, entitling them to a ribbon of merit, $100 cash for them, and $150 for their art teacher for classroom supplies. They were: Anna Allen of Potosi High School (teacher, Pamela Perry) in the category of Ceramics Grades 11-12; and Lucy Pham of Fredericktown Middle School in the category of Black and White Drawing Grades 7-8 (teacher, Doug Howell).
More students were singled out for Awards for Excellence in their grade divisions, which entitled them to a special ribbon, $50 for the student, and $100 for their art teacher to use for art supplies. They were: Grades 3-4, Billy Arthur, Central West Elementary (teacher, Jami Heflin); Grades 5-6, Bethany Bridgeman, Valley R-6 (teacher, Kat Grajek); Grades 7-8, Lucy Pham, Fredericktown Middle School (teacher, Doug Howell); Grades 9-10, Sophia Murphy, North County High School (teacher, Mary Hoehn); Grades 11-12, ZuZu Smugala, Farmington High School (teacher, Debbie Dunnegan).
Additionally, 220 students were awarded 1st-4th place ribbons throughout 11 media categories and 5 age divisions. To check out the full list of ribbon and award winners, click here.
More than 850 student artists included their work in the show this year, resulting in more than 1,500 pieces of artwork overseen by participating teachers from 13 public and private schools, as well as homeschools.
