Aspiring actors, theatre enthusiasts, and performers of all levels are invited to participate in an exciting Stage Combat Workshop, hosted by the Mineral Area Council on the Arts (MACOA) at the MAC Fine Arts Theatre. This two-hour workshop, led by experienced actor, Kevin Bohnenkamp, will take place on May 17th, 2025 and is open to participants ages 14 and up. The cost to attend is just $10 per person.

Meet Your Instructor: Kevin Bohnenkamp

Kevin Bohnenkamp is a seasoned performer and artist who has graced the MAC stage numerous times in productions such as Romeo and Juliet, Godspell, The Laramie Project, and many more. His extensive experience in stage combat brings invaluable insight into the art of safely performing fight scenes, making this workshop an incredible opportunity for actors to sharpen their skills and enhance their stage presence.

What You’ll Learn

This hands-on workshop is designed to teach essential stage combat techniques while emphasizing safety, precision, and performance quality. Participants will engage in partnered exercises, practical demonstrations, and a choreographed fight sequence under Kevin’s guidance.

Hour 1: Foundations of Safe Stage Combat

  • Introduction to Stage Combat & Safety
  • The Principles of Safe Combat – Illusion vs. impact, communication, control, trust, and cooperation.
  • Warm-Up & Conditioning – Essential stretches and exercises to prevent injuries.
  • Basic Safety Techniques – Learning to fall safely, reaction timing, pulling punches, and weapon safety.

Hour 2: Practical Application & Choreography

  • Partnered Exercises – Slow-motion drills, light-contact exercises, and selling strikes.
  • Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them – Overcommitting movements, miscommunication, and lack of focus.
  • Emergency Protocols & Injury Prevention – How to assess risks and respond to accidents.
  • Final Choreographed Fight Scene & Q&A – Participants will practice and refine a short, staged fight sequence.
