At 7 p.m., the day will conclude with “Shaken, Not Stirred” – The Music of James Bond Movies concert presented as a collaboration between Mineral Area Council on the Arts, Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy (MAFAA), and Mineral Area College, with co-sponsorship from the City of Farmington.

The first movie based on the James Bond character by novelist Ian Fleming, Dr. No, launched a series of 27 movies that have enthralled audiences with the seriously handsome British cold-war secret agent with Scottish roots, equally at home in swim trunks and tuxedo, with spy gadgets precise for every challenge, driving stylish cars equally equipped with spy tech, and always a beautiful woman on hand whether friend or foe.  As exciting as 007 is to the movie-goer visually, the theme song and film scores are classics and recognized worldwide.  The movies are replete with songs performed by both British and American pop stars.  Some climbed the Billboard charts and are ever popular today, such as “Live and Let Die” by Paul McCartney, “For Your Eyes Only” by Sheena Easton, “Nobody Does It Better” by Carly Simon, and “Skyfall” by Adele.

The concert is coordinated by Dr. Kevin White who has orchestrated and arranged the tunes specifically for the 75+ member MAFAA Studio Orchestra (Concert Band).  Under the direction of White, the orchestra which has a decades-long history of performing standard concert band repertoire is rehearsing the eighteen numbers which span the long history of the James Bond films.  Preparation for this concert is providing an opportunity to branch out into “Pops Orchestral” styles and film scores.  Come, hear the instrumental theme songs, sultry ballads, and powerhouse tunes of James Bond movie history.

Dr. Kevin White is an icon locally for his talent and skills as a musician and composer.  He completed a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at Loyola University and his doctoral studies in Music Composition at the University of South Carolina.  He has taught music courses and led the music department at Mineral Area College for twenty-three years.  He recently coordinated and arranged both instrumental and vocal music for the 20th Baby Boomer Reunion Concert at the Farmington Centene Center.  Additionally, he has arranged music for the Centene Center’s History of Country Music series for 10 years.  For several years he arranged tunes for the Mineral Area College students to perform in a concert series titled Studio Show, which had themes such as The Beatles, Chicago, TV Theme Songs, and James Bond.  In addition to a plethora of arrangements, Dr. White composed an original score for the 75-member Mineral Area College Concert Band aptly titled “Metropolis” referencing his favorite superhero, Superman.

Dr. White doesn’t “toot his own horn” or name-drop, but he is equally revered for his skill as a trumpeter.  He has performed with artists such as Captain and Tenille, Temptations, Four Tops, Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Guy Lombardo Orchestra.  As trumpeter in the Mineral Area Kicks Band, he has performed for the Mineral Area Night of Jazz and Mineral Area Jazz Festival with artists Doc Severinsen, Gregg Bissonette, Phil Woods, Bill Watrous, Wayne Bergeron, Lou Marini, Delfeayo Marsalis, Sean Jones, and the New York Voices.

Concert tickets are $15.  Click to visit the MACOA Square Space https://bit.ly/MACOAOddsOnLuck_ShakenNotStirred for online purchase options of “Odds On Luck” pre-concert party for $35, “Shaken, Not Stirred” concert $15, or purchase both together for $50.  (Convenience fees apply.)  Tickets are also available at the Civic Center, #2 Black Knight Drive, Farmington.

The City of Farmington and Mineral Area Council on the Arts are grateful for the relationship with Mineral Area College and Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy.  MACOA has provided decades of inspiration to the region since the fall of 1990.  Through the years, MACOA’s mission has been to promote, create and support opportunities for the community to experience the arts right here and to do so affordably.  “MACOA sponsors the arts in many ways.  The effort to inspire comes in many forms.  Artists and performers are brought to the Parkland from cities such as Nashville, New York, Dallas, Kansas City, St. Louis, and more.   To many of the residents of the six counties MACOA serves, these opportunities would otherwise be unattainable.  The inspiration MACOA provides to the art community also takes shape as opportunities to perform or showcase personal artwork locally.  A concert like “Shaken, Not Stirred” allows local performers the opportunity to be on stage as part of a large ensemble to create challenging and masterpiece works – all while having fun!”
